  • Quality of life
  • Empowering patients to make their own decisions
  • Maintaining the dignity of the individual
  • Providing meaningful support for the family so that they may remain close
  • Helping the patient and family find spiritual peace

When to consider hospice

Any person diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and whose life expectancy is measured in weeks or months is eligible for hospice services. Generally, hospice care is appropriate for patients who have a life expectancy of about six months, and have either declined or elected to discontinue curative medical treatment.

In many cases, the primary physician will suggest hospice care when curative treatment is no longer deemed effective or desirable. However, patients and family members should feel free to open the discussion of hospice care at any time during a life-limiting illness.

Patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN), dialysis, chemotherapy or radiation as palliative measures are admissible for hospice care. The primary care physician is encouraged to consult with the hospice medical director as to when a patient should be admitted to hospice care.

Under the direction of a physician, hospice offers effective methods of pain and symptom control to allow patients to remain alert and to live life as fully and as comfortably as possible. Hospice emphasizes human values that go beyond the physical needs of the patient, and hospice team members are trained to address emotional, psychological and spiritual needs of the patient and family members.
